Mathematicians at Work and Things We Have In Common

Mathematicians at Work

Students worked in math groups to solve a variety of word problems. This group of students used base-ten blocks for checking their answers while playing the game "Think. Build Check."

Things We Have in Common

After reading Chester's Way, students worked in partnerships to interview each other and find out what they have in common. These partners were happily getting asking and answering questions to get to know each other.

Exploring Sound

Third graders explored sound this week! They rotated through six stations thinking about how sound was created, what vibrated, and what their evidence was. Their findings were recorded on the clipboards. These third graders had a blast!

The station above is called "Nail It." At this station, these scientists were exploring the varying sounds of nails laid on foam once hit with a wooden striker. In the background, you can see another scientist working at a station called "Spoon" At that station, these scientists used spoons on a string like an elephant's trunk. They hit different surfaces to create sound and feel the vibrations.

These scientists are at the station titled "Straw." They flattened the straw with their lips and blew trying to create sound.

"Head Harp" - These scientists used string around their heads and over their ears to make sound.

"Head Harp" - These scientists were trying to see if they could create sound with the string in other ways.

At the station above "Corrugated Tube" scientists created sound by twirling the tube in the air. Look how much fun they're having!

Second Week of School

We had an awesome short week! Community building activities, becoming familiar with books in our classroom library, our in-class museums, and messy paint projects made our second week of school memorable.

Pouring art project using acrylic paint, silicone, and floetrol (to thin the paint). This quick painting experience allowed students to creatively express themselves.

Classroom setup for the Summer Artifact Museum!
These third graders were highly focused on using these artifacts to make two hypotheses: What can you say about how a classmate spent their summer and what is one thing you think you've learned about this person based on their artifact?

Reading Around the Room

Third graders were introduced to the many book baskets in our classroom library. In partnerships and trios, they begin their journey of reading their way around the classroom.

The First Week of School!

Welcome to our class blog! Please stay tuned for what this school year has in store! We just completed our first week (3 days) of school! In that time, we've discovered that we're all wonders, have so much kindness to spread, and created a variety of representations for what the Golden Rule looks, sounds, and feels like.  Stay tuned for the completed collages!
